Bellerin back Ozil’s decision to dump German team
Arsenal’s Spanish full back, Hector Bellerin has voiced his support for German teammate, Mesut Ozil following his decision to retire from the national team.
The Arsenal midfield maestro released a lengthy three-part statement on Sunday in which he defended his decision to meet with Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan just before the World Cup. The meeting caused controversy in his homeland, and Ozil revealed for the first time that his family were subjected to threatening phone calls and hate mail as a result.
He’s been a mainstay in the German team since his debut nine years ago, making 92 appearances, scoring 23 times and winning the World Cup in 2014.
Bellerin took to twitter to support his teammate
“Surreal that someone who has done so much for his country on and off the pitch has been treated with such disrespect, Well done Mesut Ozil for standing up to this behaviour!”
The midfielder returned to training today after the long break.
