SWITZERLAND, SEPTEMBER 03 – Tension, violence and chaos can only describe the scenario at Jakande roundabout, Lekki, Lagos, the location of Shoprite, Circle mall on Tuesday afternoon as angry protesters and hoodlums storm the South-African owned retail store.

Their action follows ongoing attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants in South Africa since August 28.

The situation has led to loss of lives and businesses belonging to Nigerians in South Africa, raising fears of more disaster in the coming days.

The latest xenophobic attacks have been condemned by Nigerians across the globe with many calling for reprisal attacks in Nigeria where several South African businesses have continued to flourish.

Eyewitnesses told Today’s Echo that it started with a protest by a group of men and women who started overturning goods from the shelves in the store in protest. The protest quickly degenerated as an angry mob stormed the store, vandalized the doorway and gained entrance.

Today’s Echo gathered that the police arrived the scene and shot into the crowd, allegedly killing a protester and hell was let loose. As at the time our correspondent arrived the scene, angry mobs were seen patrolling the adjoining streets seeking to attack foreigners, especially South Africans.

Today’s Echo gathered that Lekki Shoprite store had to shut down to avoid further violence.

In a video, residents stormed the mall in reprisal to the ongoing xenophobic attacks on Nigerians but few gained entrance into the mall destroyed items and attacked the officials.

In one of the videos posted on social media, the body of a young man could be seen lying on the ground in a pool of blood. Two police trucks can also be seen burning close to the mall.

According to reports, 4 Police Trucks with officers are presently at Mall to forestall more violence.
