The Tunisian president, Béji Caïed Essebsi has conferred the country’s National Merit Award on the president of the African Development Bank(AfDB), Akinwunmi Adesina for the selfless contributions of the Pan-African bank to the Economic development of Tunisia.

“I am very honoured to receive the National Merit Award from President Béji Caïed Essebsi. It is a recognition of the work of the Bank and its staff. We are more than ever committed to strengthening our support to Tunisia, ” Adesina tweeted on Friday.

Addressing Adesina, President of the Assembly of People’s Representatives Mohamed Ennaceur said:

“You place humanity at the heart of your action… We appreciate the Bank’s interventions in youth employment and disadvantaged regions.”

Adesina also visited the Museedo Bardo, to pay tribute to the victims of the 2015 terrorist attack in the country.

Adesina had announced on Friday that the AfDB has allocated $500 million in loans for Tunisia in 2019.

Adesina said the bank would support Tunisia in the fields of energy, education, infrastructure, communications and technology, Reuters reported. The government needs around $2.5 billion in external financing in 2019, officials said.

Tunisia’s parliament said on May 2nd it had rejected a government plan to issue up to $800 million in bonds this year, dealing a blow to the government, which is seeking to secure funding to cover the country’s fiscal budget deficit.
