Senate Screens President Buhari’s 43 Ministerial Nominees(Live Updates)

The Senate today, commenced the screening of the 43 ministerial nominees presented by president Buhari. The list contains one nominee from the 36 states of the federation and an extra one each from 7 states.

Only 12 out of the current ministers have been returned and the list includes 7 women.

The senate has cut short its recess to be able to screen these nominees.

12: 30: Uchechukwu Samson Ogah from Abia State is being screened. Mr Ogah is 49yrs, has an MBA, is a Chartered Accountant, Entrepreneur and President of Masters Energy Group. Impressive resume. He also answers most of the questions intelligently

1:05: Senator George Akume was asked to take a bow and go as Senator Emmanuel Oker-Jev who defeated George Akume moved that the Senate tradition of bow and go for former senators be respected.

1: 10: Senator Godswill Akpabio takes his turn for screening. Akpabio will has also been asked to take a bow and go like Akume in the tradition of the Senate.

1: 35: Senate has suspended the screening of the ministerial nominees, in order to go on a short break. The suspension call was made by Senate President Ahmad Lawan who suggested that they resume at 2.30pm.

Before the suspension, the Upper Chamber had screened four out of the 43 names submitted to them by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.

Those so far screened are: Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah, (Abia), Emeka Nwajiuba (Imo), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom) and George Akume (Benue)

3: 01: Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has just been screened. A senator from his Rivers state pleaded with him to use the privilege of his position to do more for the state.

3: 50 : Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu undergoes a very long screening. Speaks about the establishment of two new agencies.

4: 00: Senator Olorunibe Mamora is on the spot. There is a lot of laughter and the Senate president asks that comments be restricted to the subject matter. Mamora is well known to the house as a former senator

Minority Leader, Senator Eyinaya Abaribe: “We know of the situation where senators left, were offered positions a senator shouldn’t take. Senator Mamora refused such positions and we commend him for it.”

He is asked to take a bow and leave.

4: 34: Olamilekan Adegbite from Ogun state is on the spot. He is former governor Ibikunle Amosun’s man. He has an impressive resume.

Senator Okorocha is grilling the ministerial nominee.

Okorocha: ‘tell me in a single sentence, what is the problem of Nigeria. What can you do to guarantee happiness for the people of Nigeria?”

Adegbite: “Ensuring that Nigerian’s money works for them. When procurement rules are followed, people get the benefit of the money spent. For private sector to work in Nigeria, we need to build confidence.”

He is asked to take a bow and leave.

5:14: Former Minister of Education, Dr Adamu Adamu is on the spot. He was also asked to take a bow after many questions.

6: 15: Sharon Ikeazor from Anambra State is screened quickly.

That concludes it today. 10 Ministerial nominees were screened today
