The Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara have issued a joint statement on the attempted impeachment of Gov Ortom of Benue State this morning.

The Senate posted the statement by the two National Assembly leaders on its Twitter page this afternoon, with the caption:

“The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, have described the on-going situation in the Benue State House of Assembly as “a desecration of the legislative sanctity.”

Earlier today, the Benue House of Assembly was under siege for several hours as security forces surrounded the complex, preventing lawmakers loyal to Samuel Ortom, who had just defected to the PDP from entering.

Later, 7 APC lawmakers under the leadership of the impeached Speaker of the house, signed a notice of impeachment for the governor. However, they were only 7 members of the house, out of 32.

Below is the statement from Saraki and Dogara:

If this madness and siege on our democratic institutions continue without strong sanctions by the leadership of the parties, whose adherents are culpable, our democracy is in grave danger of collapse.

The APC as a party is suddenly becoming desperate and it is going to cost us all as a people.
