Lawan vs Ndume: Voting Commences for Ninth Senate Leadership

SWITZERLAND, JUNE 11 – Voting has begun on the floor of the Nigerian Senate for the leadership of the Ninth Senate.

The two official contenders for Senate President are Yobe North Senator-elect, Ahmed Lawan and Ali Ndume of Borno-South. The third contender, Danjuma Goje withdrew from the race.

The two lawmakers were the only two nominated by their colleagues on the floor of the chamber
The Clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori, subsequently announced the procedure and process of election.

Lawan is the favourite, being the official candidate of the ruling APC, which has the majority in Senate. However, his opponent, Ali Ndume who is also from the APC, has the backing of the PDP.

The method of voting is secret ballot.
