….launches fresh probe against emir, creates more emirates

The Kano state government under governor Umar Ganduje has made fresh moves against the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi ll, lending some credibility to rumours that the governor wants to depose the monarch.

The new moves by the state government include a fresh anti-corruption investigation and the creation of new emirates in Kano state to weaken the powers of the emir.

Today’s Echo gathers that the Kano State government has launched a fresh probe into the financial dealings of the Kano Emirate through the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, inviting senior emirate officials for questioning.

A letter signed by the commission’s Director of Operations, CSP Sulaiman Aliyu Gusau on Monday, invited an aide to the Emir, Alhaji Isa Bayero for investigation.

The letter, written on behalf of Executive Chairman, Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, may signal fresh corruption charges against Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

“Pursuant to provision of section 31(1) (a) and (b) of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Law 2008 (as amended) requested release of the officer to explain payment vouchers from 2013 to 2017,” part of the letter reads.

The commission had in 2018 commenced large-scale probe against Emir Sanusi before the state House of Assembly intervened, which forced the commission to stay action on the matter.

Also on Monday, the Kano State House of Assembly commenced hearing on a bill to create more emirates in Kano state. The proposed new emirates are Karaye, Bichi, Rano and Gaya.

The implication of creating additional emirates is that the powers of the present Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi ll, will be reduced.

President Buhari’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad hailed the move in a tweet on Monday.

Today’s Echo had reported in the aftermath of the gubernatorial elections, about the allegation by Coalition of United Political Parties(CUPP) that there are plans to depose the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The allegation was contained in a statement by the spokesman of the CUPP, Imo Ugochinyere.

The statement said some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress in Sokoto and Kano States were behind the move.
