Isa Funtua Stood by me in my Political Journey – Buhari

SWITZERLAND, JULY 21 – President Muhammadu Buhari has eulogised his friend and close confidant, Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua, who died on Monday from Cardiac arrest.

In a statement released late Wednesday night, presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, quoted the president as describing the late Funtua as a man who consistently stood by him in his political journey.

Shehu said, “President Muhammadu Buhari received with deep sadness on Monday evening information on passing of his longtime friend and associate, Malam Isma’ila Isa Funtua, who was Life Patron of International Press Institute and Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN).

“The President condoles with family members, government and people of Katsina State, and all associates of the former President of NPAN, especially the media industry, on the loss, describing him as “greatly admired and respected’’.

“President Buhari believes the demise of the publisher and businessman has created a huge gap as Malam Funtua consistently stood by him in his political journey.

“The President prayed to Allah for repose of Malam Funtua’s soul, and to grant the family strength and fortitude to bear the loss.”

Meanwhile, more details have emerged on how Mallam Funtua, an in law of the president, died.

Funtua, who was a former Minister in the Second Republic, reportedly felt unease at about 4pm. Today’s Echo gathers from media sources that he drove himself to a hospital where he died.

A source said: “It is difficult to confirm what really happened but he lost the battle after getting to the hospital.”

Today’s Echo gathered that the deceased will be buried on Tuesday, according to Islamic rites. He was 78.
