The former ambassador to South Africa, who resigned and defected from the APC to PDP yesterday has apparently commenced his campaign to become the next governor of Niger State.
A poster of Ahmed Ibeto for Niger State has surfaced online. Popular writer and political critic, Gimba Kakanda made some revelations on Facebook this morning as he puts up the poster with the following statement:
“The intensity of yesterday’s political hurricane was more felt by the people of Niger state: the resignation of Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa and defection to PDP. Ahmed Ibeto belongs in the category of politicians to describe as heavyweight, and he earned this by his making as an early and consistent starter in politics.
He was Local Government Chairman, State Chairman of the defunct NRC, member of the House of Representatives and then finally a Deputy Governor for eight years. It’s easy to be amused by his political history, especially the bits not cited here.
What’s also played to his advantage is the popular perception of him as a man of integrity – especially as Ustaz. Not that I fall for such personality scam. He’s given the public an impression of his religiosity, and known to be a quiet rebel, as seen from his strange disagreement with his boss, Governor Babangida Aliyu. He defected to APC while still a Deputy Governor .
I’m a proponent of robust opposition, for it’s the only way to keep political office-holders on their toes. And Niger State has just found a man fit to give the incumbent Governor a run for his money. Even as an admirer of current Governor Sani Bello, I’m triggered by his entry. It’s good for our democracy!”
