SWITZERLAND, JANUARY 06 – There are fears that World War 3 might be looming as tension between Iran and the United States reached a dangerous stage after the US killed Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds military force and one of the most powerful figures in the Islamic Republic, early Friday in an airstrike in Baghdad.

Thousands of people marched Saturday and Sunday in funeral processions in Iraq and Iran.

Iran has declared war in a very old and traditional way. First time in centuries that they have hoisted the red flag. On Sunday, IRAN today pinpointed 35 “key US targets” for revenge after its top general was assassinated – with America expecting retaliation “within weeks”.

Hours later, rockets were fired near the US Embassy in Baghdad and at an airbase housing Ameri

The chilling flag display is seen as a clear warning the Islamic Republic is ready to fulfil its worrying pledge to strike back at America and Donald Trump.

Chillingly written across the “war flag” were the words: “Those who want to avenge the blood of Hussein”.

Red flags in Shiite tradition symbolise both blood spilled unjustly and serve as a call to avenge a person who is slain.

It was hoisted above the important Jamkaran Mosque which is on the outskirts of the holy city of Qom, about 100 miles south of Tehran.

US President Mr. Trump tweeted Saturday that the U.S. would target 52 Iranian sites if Iran retaliates for the strike.

The Iranian government also announced Sunday it would no longer abide by the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal, lifting restrictions on centrifuges, uranium enrichment and more. President Trump pulled the U.S. out of the deal in 2018.

The tension has spilled over to neighbouring Iraq, an all of both US and Iran. The Iraqi Parliament approved a resolution calling on the government to expel some 5,000 U.S. troops from the country. President Trump said Sunday “we are not leaving unless they pay us back” for an air base in Iraq.
