SWITZERLAND, OCTOBER 29 – The Minister of Transport, Chibuike Amaechi has mandated the Chinese contractors working on the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail line to complete at least one of the tracks up to Ebute Metta station by the end of November.
This was revealed by the minister on Monday as he gave account of his tour of rail way project sites.
“I just mandated our Chinese contractors on the Lagos-Ibadan rail line to ensure completion of at least one of the tracks up to Ebute Metta station by the end of November. They have to triple their output to makeup for the rainy days.
“Completion of the 8 minor stations along the Lagos-Ibadan rail line is also part of their mandate while they take a little more time to complete the 4 major stations.
“We hope to test-run and start free rides at the end of next month so people travelling along this route during the end of year holiday season can enjoy the trains.”
Amaechi was recently in China to take delivery of more trains for the the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan rail lines. An excited Amaechi test-ran the new locomotives and expressed his pleasure.
The minister also recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), with Russian firms for the modernisation, development of railway infrastructure, rehabilitation of existing Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) rolling stock-fleet and upgrading of workshops across the country.
