Victoria Obaze emerges third Nigerian to become Mayor in UK
Nigerian-born Victoria Obaze has been sworn in as the Mayor of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, United Kingdom.
Today’s Echo gathers that Obaze, who hails from Imo State, is the first black Mayor of the community. She is now the third Nigerian-born Mayor in the UK.
After she was sworn in on Wednesday, the Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora Affairs, Abike Dabiri made a statement on her Twitter handle:
“Another Nigerian,Mrs Victoria Obaze,sworn in as a Civic Mayor of London Borough of Tower Hamlets, UK This makes her the third Nigerian to become a Mayor in the UK in the last few weeks , joining Mr Ernest Ezeajughi, and Mrs Kate Anorue,. Proudly Nigerian.”
Obaze, who contested three previous councillorship elections in 2010, 2014 as well as 2016 and failed, eventually succeeded in an election conducted on May 5, 2018 in Whitechapel Ward.
She later became the Council’s Deputy Speaker following her nomination by her Councillor Colleagues from where she took over the mantle as Mayor of London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
