Africa Records Highest Daily Number of COVID-19 Cases as Total Hits 348,871

SWITZERLAND, JUNE 27 – The African continent on Friday recorded 11,219 COVID-19 cases, the highest daily number ever since the outbreak hit early this year, as the pandemic accelerates dangerously in the region.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported 11,219 new cases on the continent on Friday with 216 new deaths, bringing the total number of cases to 348,871 and 9,098 deaths.

The highest number of new cases came from Southern Africa where South Africa has been leading the way with the total number of infections and deaths.

South Africa now accounts for about 30 percent of all the cases in Africa and close to 25 percent of all deaths. But the region also leads in the number of recoveries with 62,284 cases closed.

The pandemic has spread to 54 of the 55 countries in the African region, according to the African Union.
