4,000 women set to participate in Lagos Women Run 2017
About 4,000 women will participate in this year’s edition of Lagos Women Run on Saturday, November 11, 2017.
Tayo Popoola, the Coordinator of the race, said on Wednesday in Lagos that the event was in line with the Lagos State Government’s initiative to promote healthy living among women through sports participation.
The 10 km race will take-off from the National Stadium, Lagos, run through Jibowu, Yaba, Herbert Macaulay Way, Costain and terminate at Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Popoola said that the main objective of the race was to create awareness in the eradication of social vices targeted at women.
“The Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, is always happy when he sees women engage in sports events, with a common purpose of eradicating vices which negatively affect womanhood.
“The Lagos Women Run is a 10-kilometre race expected to have women from different spheres of life converge to promote awareness about various abuses targeted at women.
“It’s not just about a group of women in a sports competition racing to reach the finish line and win the prize money; it is a run that comes in many facets with a lot of attachments.
“There will be women who will come and run against cancer.
“Some will run for campaign against women brutality and other social vices against the well-being of women,’’ Popoola said.
She said that the Lagos State government has initiated various programmes to campaign against abuse of women.
“The Lagos Women Run will help boost various government initiatives to create awareness to stop all social vices against women through sports.
“Among others, the event is expected to bring awareness to the general public about issues affecting women such as sexual abuse, female child education, family and issues of rape.
“This is one intervention measure that has been commended by the governor.”
