The organisers of the annual Ballon d’Or award, France Football have offered a formal apology to Spain international midfielder Andres Iniesta for their failure to name him a winner of the award in his illustrious career.

Editor of France Football, Pascal Ferre tendered this apology in the last edition of the magazine, hinting that a spectacular World Cup campaign for the diminutive midfielder could change the narrative.

Ferre wrote:”Forgive us, Andres, for us, he wasn’t just a player, he was the player. His sacrifices for the team ultimately deprived him of greater individual recognition.”  He added:””Of all the absences on the list of Ballon d’Or winners, his is particularly painful. We can only hope he has a special campaign at the World Cup in Russia and repair this democratic anomaly.”

The midfield maestro has clome close twice, finished second and third on two occasions despite appearing to be the favourite for the award in 2010 after scoring the winner in the final against the Netherlands.

Iniesta who is likely in his final season at the Camp Nou rolled back the years in last Saturday’s 5-0 Copa Del Rey final win over Sevilla at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid. He is likely to move to China to see out his career after winning 34 trophies in 16 years with Barcelona.
