SWITZERLAND, JANUARY 24 – American teenage sensation Coco Gauff caused the second biggest upset on Friday at the Australian Open as she knocked out defending champion Naomi Osaka from the tournament in Melbourne Park to enter the women’s singles fourth round.
15-year-old Gauff crushed the world No. 3 Osaka 6-3, 6-4 in just over an hour to ease into the next stage. Gauff had lost to Osaka at the US Open last year but this time, she was too good to handle for the Japanese champion.
Gauff avoided a repeat defeat as a string of backhand errors off the Osaka’s racquet gave the 15-year-old the break midway through the opening set.
The pattern repeated itself in the second set, as Osaka continued to misfire and Gauff served out the victory after just 67 minutes on court.
Osaka has now failed to defend her two major titles – US Open and Australian Open.
Gauff had started off her campaign with a straight sets victory (7-6, 6-3) over seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams in the first round before battling past Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea of Romania in a three-set thriller in the second round.
Osaka was the third former Open winner to bow out of the draw after Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, who won the title in 2017 and 2018, lost their respective matches at Melbourne Park earlier in the day.
7-times champion Serena Williams, who was bidding for her 24th Grand Slam title to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record, was stunned 6-4, 7-6, 7-5 by China’s Wang Qiang while Wozniacki bid an emotional farewell to professional tennis after suffering a 7-5 3-6 7-5 loss against Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur.
