SWITZERLAND, JULY 29 – London Club, Arsenal is reportedly to be “close” to signing Sami Khedira.
The Juventus star was spotted at the Emirates at the weekend as Arsenal lost 2-1 to Lyon.
The midfielder still has a year left of his contract in Turin, but Arsenal boss Unai Emery is keen to strengthen his squad.
And respected Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri has tweeted that Khedira is “close” to joining Arsenal.
That’s despite Emery playing down speculation that the German will join the Premier League giants.
“Khedira is a very good player but this is the first time I have heard his name mentioned,”Emery said after Arsenal were beaten by Lyon on Sunday.
Khedira struggled with injury last season, making just ten Serie A appearances as Juventus won their eighth title in a row.
The Italian giants have signed Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot this summer, appearing to limit Khedira’s chances of minutes.
Arsenal’s move for Khedira comes just a few days after deals for Dani Ceballos and William Saliba were confirmed.
Ceballos is on a season-long loan from Real Madrid while Saliba has been sent back to St Etienne for the new campaign.
The Gunners are also believed to be close to signing Lille star Nicolas Pepe, who is likely to cost £72million.
Kieran Tierney is also on Arsenal’s wish-list with Celtic already rejecting two bids from the Gunners.
And Arsenal hero Ray Parlour has backed Emery to complete two more deals before the August 8 transfer deadline.
“The worry for me has always been the defence,” Parlour said.
“We’re talking about [signing] good players but we aren’t talking about no defenders at the moment.
“Defenders is probably the key area where we are missing at the moment.
“I really hope they get Tierney because I think he’s a real quality player.
“It’s one of those situations where you’ve just got to wait and see what happens with the transfer window.
“A lot of frustrated fans because they looked at the transfer budget and it was only £40m-50m, they thought, bit suddenly they’re trying to bring in new players.
“Hopefully they can bring in Pepe, that would be a big, big boost for every fan that’s going to be following Arsenal next season.”
