Libya is currently trending on the social media in Nigeria right now as many Nigerians discuss the horrific details of recent revelations of their countrymen sold as slaves in the North African country.
Few days ago, a CNN team travelled to Tripoli last month after obtaining footage of a migrant auction. While there, they witnessed a dozen men being auctioned off for as little as $400 each.
CNN was told of slave markets at nine locations across Libya, but many more auctions are believed to take place each month.
CNN reports that they were told of auctions in nine different locations across Libya but they believe there are more.
The migrants are from sub-Saharan countries, with Nigerians being in the majority. Graphic photos and videos of black men being killed or tortured in the most gruesome circumstances have also emerged on the internet. Many Nigerians are crossing the Sahara Desert into Libya in the hope that they will be transported across the Mediterranean into Europe.
The Libya slavery issue has sparked global outrage as the EU-Africa summit puts the migrant issue top on the agenda. Nigerians are reacting on various social media platforms including twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Nigerian-based nairaland forum. On Twitter, Libya is ranking as no 1.
Nigerian celebrities who have reacted to the issue include Femi Fani-Kayode, Whizkid, Davido, Toke Makinwa, Tiwa Savage, Omoni Oboli, Dbanj, and Cynthia Morgan.
