Gunmen kill 2 teachers, 4 others in Benue

Six people including two teachers of Makurdi Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) have been reportedly killed by gunmen in Benue State.

It was gathered that the deceased on Wednesday at the close of work went to inspect some farmland for rice cultivation under the umbrella of a cooperative society near Ikpayongo community in Gwer East Local Government Area about 10 minutes’ drive from Makurdi.

It was further learnt that the deceased were ambushed at the farm by the gunmen suspected to be herders who attacked them with dangerous weapons and killed six persons out of the 10 inspecting the farmland.

The remaining four people, also said to be teachers, however escaped but with injuries while the remains of the six were reportedly recovered by security operatives the following day in the bush.

The deceased teachers were identified as Mr. Stephen Tavaku, the Head Teacher of St. Mary’s Primary School, North Bank in Makurdi and Mr Christian Anankpa, a PhD student of ABU, Zaria who was the Basic Science Teacher at St Mary’s UBE Junior Secondary School, North Bank in Makurdi.

Benue State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni and his spokesman, Moses Yamu, were yet to respond to calls to their phones and messages put through their telephone lines at the time of sending this report.
