There was a chaotic scene at the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Uyo this morning after the complex came under attack from suspected political thugs who allegedly hindered movement into the state assembly complex.
They were allegedly armed with dangerous weapons, burning tyres to disrupt regular movement into the assembly complex.
According to reports, anti-riot policemen who arrived the scene, had a hectic time to quell the riotous situation as they are yet to bring the menace under control.
The latest development is connected with a recent court judgement sacking a state lawmaker who defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the House of Assembly has said.
The sacked lawmaker, Idongesit Ituen, represented the Itu state constituency.
However, many see it as a proxy war between the Governor, Emmanuel Udom(PDP) and his predecessor and erstwhile godfather, Senator Godswill Akpabio who recently defected to the APC.
Emerging scenes from the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly show that a former member of the Assembly, who was recently ostracized by the Federal High Court, Idongesit Ituen, acting in consonance with his mentor Senator Godswill Akpabio, has mobilized
Eye witness report that the thugs were heard charging loudly that without Idongesit Ituen, no one else can enter the complex.
Earlier today, the State Chapter of the PDP had issued a statement, that there were plans by the APC to use thugs and cause a breach of peace, thereby stalling proceedings at the chambers.
Gov Udom Emmanuel on his part has repeatedly warned politicians against violence, maintaining that nothing short of peace and unity is needed to move Akwa Ibom forward, irrespective of political affiliations or aspirations.
It would be recalled that the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Onofiok Luke had last week acted in accordance with the judgement of the Federal High Court, which vacated the seat of Idongesit Ituen.
