A group of women, on Saturday 15 December 2018, staged a march at Yaba market in Lagos to protest the sexual harassment and somewhat derogatory sexual slurs that accompany it.
Anybody who patronises popular markets in Lagos Like Oshodi, Yaba, Balogun and Tejuosho markets will be familiar with the incessant touching, catcalls, invasion of personal space, forceful pulling and insults given to visitors to the market especially to women.
These traders see it as a way to woo people for patronage without questioning the rationale behind forcefully pulling someone to wares that are in plain sight.
The market men were not too pleased with the effrontery of women to protest this treatment and reacted violently throwing water and insulting words. Some even chanted, “we must touch.”
Following the Market march, some people have taken to Twitter to react to the boldness and the actions of the traders in Yaba Market.
Nah. Even the policemen who are meant to protect the girls are laughing. The policemen definitely think like these other guys. This is highly pissing me off. Lord knows I’d have started a fight if I was marching there. What the hell?!! https://t.co/r4SkQcAYI3

I will be at yaba tomorrow ,
What I chose to wear,
I will wear .
And if by madness you choose to touch me in order to “sell your market” .You will be shocked at what I will do.
But it will not be attack.
It will be self defense.

We should all boycott yaba market until the authorities do something about this sexual harassment. This rubbish needs to stop. Would this market monster like this to happen to the wives or daughters on daily basis.#MarketMarchYaba#BoycottYabaMarket

Yaba market men are notoriously known for groping. They touch women anyhow, which is bad, now the ladies that are tired of their stupidity are protesting against their barbaric acts, and they’re still harassing them for protesting against their disgusting behaviours. Madness

Women are protesting the harassment by men in Yaba, and some of you boys are exposing how dumb you are by trying to find a way to put the blame on women.
Be mute, grow silent, close your mouth! Be ashamed!

However, some are of the opinion that there is nothing wrong with the groping because some women actually love the treatment.
An interesting day today guys. I was at the #MarketMarchYaba and just because we said “stop touching us”, they booed us, called us prostitutes, lesbians and jobless people. They also threw pure water at us, one landed right on my chest. A guy even touched me TWICE!!!
